Liebe(r) Modder & Coder, es wird Zeit, Freelancer endlich Hardwarecursor beizubringen.

Im Moment ist es so, daß je weniger FPS das Spiel gerade liefert, desto länger braucht der Mauszeiger, um endlich auf Bewegungen der Maus zu reagieren. Übertrieben ausgedrückt: ich beweg die Maus von Links nach Rechts, geh meine Freundin schwängern, die bringt irgendwann unser Kind zur Welt, und dann erst bewegt sich der Mauszeiger auf dem Bildschirm. Der Zeiger fühlt sich an, als wäre er mit einem Gummiband an der Maus befestigt. Die zur Zeit einzigste Lösung ist, in jeder Situation möglichst hohe FPS Werte zu erzielen.

Mittels Hardwarecursor werden Zeigerbewegungen unabhängig von der FPS Zahl immer zeitgleich zur Mausbewegung ausgeführt. Damit wäre es endlich möglich, auch bei 30FPS noch was zu treffen. Solche oder noch niedrigere Werte sind mit weniger potenten Grafikkarten und / oder grafischen Verbesserungen wie Antialiasing, Bloom & Co. je nach Qualitätseinstellung dieser Optionen durchaus drin.

Dear modder(s) & coder(s), it's about time to finally teach Freelancer some hardwarecursor.

At the moment, it's like this: The less FPS the game is running with, the longer the mouse cursor takes to react on movements of the mouse. To overstate the matter: I move the mouse to the right, impregnate my girlfriend, she eventually delivers our child, then the mouse cursor starts to move. The mouse cursor feels like it's connected to the mouse via a rubber band. At the present, the only solution is to always have high FPS numbers.

Utilizing hardware cursor, movements of the cursor are independent of the FPS the game is currently running at and happen always simultaneously to the movements of the mouse. This would finally make it possible to hit something at 30FPS. Such or even lower values are quite possible on less powerful graphic cards and / or with graphical enhancements like antialiasing, bloom and the likes.

ich kenne das problem bei meinem rechner nur wusste ich bisher nicht, dass man das problem tatsächlich beheben kann. Würde mir auch sehr helfen, vor allem bei fps-rates von 40 abwärts. da wirds dann mit dem zielen beim gunnen recht schwer.

i have 170 fps so this isnt a problem for me.

But if the admins would allow it, it sounds like people with crappy computers would get it more fair, which is fine by me.

I fully agree. Even with my PC, which is imo at least middle class, I sometimes get low fps in massfight and therefore this rubberband effect. =/

A hardware cursor has it's own buffer in the VRAM of a graphics card, which works independently of frame buffers (double buffer, triple buffer). Frame buffers are those things where each rendered picture is stored before it's displayed on the screen. A software cursor doesn't have it's own buffer, so it has to be handled by the frame buffer(s).

So we have two types of buffers. For example a game uses a software cursor, like one special title we all know. Let's assume circumstances dictate a framerate of 15FPS. This means, a new frame is ready to be displayed every 66,6 (or 66.6, depending on where you are from ) milliseconds. This in turn means that in this situation, the position of a software cursor can only be updated every 66,6 milliseconds. So if you're having like 150FPS, the delay from one picture to another and thus from one updated cursor position to another is reduced to 6,67ms. Quite the difference.

A hardware cursor doesn't have this limitation. Since it doesn't have to wait for the graphics card to finish rendering a frame, it can be displayed right when mouse movement occurs. Hardware cursor is basically an overlay, displayed on top of the content of the frame buffer(s).

omfg.. just tested it and looks like I was playing fl in slow motion for 3 years. gunnery 50% up right away, maneur speed 100% up. power level is over nine thousand and rising. Shocked

das kotzt mich sowieso schon die ganzze Zeit an...
wenn ich nicht fighte und ins Leere schaue, hab ich ja konstante 50-70 Fraps, aber in Massenschlachten in einem großen System gehts bei mir schonmal auf 20-30 runter.
Und das merkt man an der Maus extrem. Ich wäre sehr dankbar

(aber bald kauf ich mir nen neuen PC ^^ MUAHAHAHA xD )

I had the same reaction as flex when i went from 60 to 150-170.

Your aim improves alot, and so does you ability to turn while aiming, which makes your turning better.

But the~evil is still as good as me, even with lower than 40 fps -.- damn him :-/

actually it isn't activated until you activate it. freelancer itself doesn't even have this function. you'd have to activate it with another tool, ATI-tray-tools for example...

graphic drivers ATI-tray tools/Nvidia Settings
and disable it manually

BUT it may cause some troubles and your game looks like 50% faster ^^
